Hi, newbie here

I have a 210 litre tank with approx 25 various fish in the tank with a Eheim Eco 2036 external filter.
The water in the tank became really cloudy over night any idea's as to what could have caused this?

I clean the tank every 2 weeks including gravel and ornaments and change 10% of the water and clean the filter every 4 weeks.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

It sounds like a bacterial bloom; this is quite common in new tanks.

How long has the tank been running and was it cycled at all? and what are the inhabitants? Some larger water changes, with warm, dechlorinated water should clear it up; I'd say you need to be doing more changes anyway; my tanks get around 50% weekly.

Do you test the water and if so what were the last set of results?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but we do need quite a lot of information before we can help properly :)

Yup it's a bacterial bloom caused by cleaning the filter. How did you clean the filter? I get a bacterial bloom after a large wc sometimes. It goes away with time in a day it should be ok. I did one time mess my tank up pretty bad and it took a few days to clear up. If you add more surface movement to the tank that will help the bloom go away that type of bacterial uses up a good amount of oxygen. So adding surface movement will help add more O2.

Thanks for all the replies.

The tank has been running about 4 months now and was filled with water from my old tank aswell. The fish i have in the tank are:

2 Bala Sharks ( 2 inches )
2 Clown Loaches ( 2 inches )
1 Pleco
5 Dwarf Gouramis
1 Black Knife Fish
5 Congo Tetras
2 Rainbow Fish
2 Torpedo Barbs
1 Cory Catfish
4 Other catfish type - Sorry cant remember the name

They have all been fine in the tank since the beginning.

To test my water i use the "dip Test" kits and all seemed within the limits i know these arn't the greeatesy way to test the water.

To clean my tank i use a gravel cleaner and a aquarium brush to clean the glass. to clean the filter i have a brush that can clean the pipes and i wash the sponges etc in the water i have removed from the tank. I also have an air stone in the tank to add more o2

Thanks again.

A few big water changes (75 or 80%) should clear it up.

I feel I should warn you that some of your fish (the bala sharks, the clown loach, possibly the plec, depending on species) are going to grow too large for your tank.

Thanks.

I will do a water change tonight and hopefully it should help clear it up, will the fish be ok in the amount of water left in the tank

Yeah when i bought the fish i was told the tank size would be fine however after doing more research i discovered i might need a bigger tank. They are small at the moment but will look into a bigger tank for the future.

Thanks

You need to leave enough water so that the fish have twice their depth or so to swim in.

Oh, and make sure you don't leave the heater exposed, or make sure it's switched off first (I always say that; I exploded one of my heaters a couple of years ago doing a massive water change  )
