When cleaning a marine tank does the sand need to be vacuumed or do you just do regular water changes? I dont the sand needs to be clean becuase you wold take the organisms away, but I just dont know.
I try to vaccuum it when I can, but in my little tank it's hard b/c the rock work really gets in the way. For the most part, if you have a good cleanup crew, there's not really anything left on the sand to vacuum anyway.
What i usually do is stuff quite a bit of filter floss down the vacum pipe and syphon the water back into my sump, as i asume that cleaning sand is mostly for mechanical filtration. And this saves me a trip to the beach to fetch more water aswell
Short answer is no. Have a good detritus eating cleanup crew and you are fine. What one should do on water changes is use a turkey baster to blow stuff off the rocks and siphon our when you stir up. PITA though, and I've been lazy about that instead just pulling water out of my sump. Maybe that's why the hair algae is spreading
