Cleaning Problems

Hi everyone I am new here so hello to all members, I have been looking after warm water tropical fish for a number of years and have always come up with the same problem when it comes to cleaning the pipes that run from the pump to the tank they get so dirty at times and it takes me forever to get them anywhere near normal looking again, at the moment I have a long cable that I push through with small bits of cotton wool at the end, but this method is so time consuming I just wonder if there are any better methods for cleaning these long plasic pipes, problems no doubt we have all had at some time.

I have never had to clean them, but I will keep an eye on the replies so I know when I do.
