What do people do to remove general debris from sand? In my last setup I had gravel and used a siphon, as I'm sure you're all familiar with. Would this work on sand or would I just end up sucking it all up?

best just using a hose and sucking the debris of the surface of the sand, with a gravel cleaner you will just suck up most of the sand :)

I pinched the kitchen funnel and rammed it on the end of the hose; once you are syphoning give it a couple of shakes just above the sand to dislodge the poo etc. and then remove thumb off end of hose and up it comes, with the sand remaining in!

I wonder if my design has medical ramifications...?

You can use your regular syphon you just need to hover it maybe an inch above the substrate and kind of swirl it around a little bit to bring the muck up off the sand and into your hose, ta-da!

The poop isn't so much a problem but the wotnot is a total pain in the backside.

Just hover the gravel vac a fraction of an inch above the surface of the sand. Rather than plunge it into the sand the way you did with gravel, you will just use it to move the waste from the sand while keeping it far enough above the sand to prevent picking up much of it. I lose a tiny bit of sand with every cleaning but I mostly just get the fish wastes. Moving that nozzle about above the sand will even stir the waste up from the sand making it easier to pick up.
