Cleaning Filter Media

I have a eheim aquaball internal filter and have been given a second one from a friend, I want to use the basket and media from the new one and add it to the one I have already in the tank, what is the best way to clean the new filter media to ensure it is clean and safe to use in my tank as it has already been used in his.

Im no expert but i though that if you get a bucket of the tank water that the old filter is going into and clean the filter sponge in this it would suffice.?

I would just give it a good wash in water. Don't use soap!! Good luck.

edit: agreed beelzebar, if the sponge still has bacteria on it which you want to keep, wash it in tank water, that will give you the best results. If not, tap water is fine.
