My son's VT Alphie died yesterday after getting a very swollen tummy and going very quiet. He pinconed around the head Wednesday and I treated with salt and interpet 9 but unfortunately he didn't make it :-(

I want to keep the tank he was in as its my hospital tank, but I don't want the chance of re-infection when I use it. What is the best way to make sure everything is clean? I need to clean the fluval 1 filter, heater, ornament and gravel too.

I am thinking bleach, but what strength? I did a search but didn't come up with much that could help.

Thanks :)

:rip: Alphie

Sorry to hear about the fish. Not much can be done when they fall prey to dropsy.

I just usually just bombared the tank with salt, drain it and than add boiling water.

1/10 bleach to water. Rinse well. Add extra de chlorine to tank water at first filling.

You have a grow out tank now for splitting the babies i haven't had dropsy for a long time but usually just do the humane thing as its usually a combination of many things so rarely curable sorry for the loss though.......

Thanks Bettaman :)

It was my 10 year olds fish so he's upset, but I've promised him the pick of the babies so he's just got to wait a while.

Hmm, yes I could split them into there, but I have a 30 gallon up and running which is ticking over with guppy juvies at the moment, just for them :fun: so at least I still have my hospital tank for emergencies

i would say 8 weeks to wait then and he can have the pick of the fry, he will be watching every weeek to see what he likes and then thats it no turning back he has it........at least it wont have to travel far and you can set he tank up ready for him so its perfect.....cool
