Right now my tank is rather filthy. It was brought to my attention to watch my fish eat. Right now im using tetra fish flanks. Whats happening is after i feed them they are taking a little in and spitting alot out which are not getting caught by the filter. So what would be a clearer alternative? Pellets? I have mostly tetras in this tank.

No fish on the bottom to hoover up?

Pellets sink quicker and will fall to the bottom (more or less) below where you feed them, while flakes are more at the mercy of the current your filter creates. Its easier to see with pellets if food is being left uneaten.

I do have a couple bottom dwelling fish that clean up the bottom if that's what you mean. So are you saying that pellets would be a better alternative?

Just suggesting that if you use pellets you'd be able to see if your fish were eating everything, and would be easier to clean up any mess. I don't know whether pellets are a better food than flake. I have little gangs of catfish to help me clean up :)

You could also try frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms, as most fish will just gobble these up. Or you could go with live alternatives which hardly make it to the substrate in my tanks.

How much of the flakes do you put in? It sounds like you may be putting in too much, no offense. How many fish and what kind are in your tank?
So we can get a better idea of how much you should be feeding, if that is the issue :)

I do prefer pellets over flakes though. They're less messy and bigger ones are certainly easier to measure out. I mainly use new life spectrum small fish formula though.

Well i have about 30 fish mixed species. All around the size of 1 inch neon tetras excepts for a couple mollies and a dwarf groumia. As far as how much, i dont really measure it out. I grap a pinch with my finger and put it in

How big are the individual flakes? I find that with small fish they take them better if I crush them up a bit before putting them in the tank. They can manage the smaller pieces better than big ones.

They are larger flakes but i do break them up
