Classroom Tank...dwarf Gouramis

Plus, for right now, the cycling will be going faster, as 8.0-8.4 should be ideal for faster bacteria growth in the filter... :)

yes, if it were fishless cycling i'd say def leave it be, but it's cycling with fish.... have you seen bignoses thread on the toxicity of ammonia and it's relation to pH WD? That's certainly one to dig out if you've not read it.

Priority for now is to keep ammonia as low as possible, reduce it's toxicity basically, a high pH is working against you for this.

Yes, I agree, more toxic. I was actually just attempting to add a chuckle of positive-ness amidst the stress, but it didn't come across, was lost in the use of words rather than live conversation. No, I'm in total agreement re the toxicity varying across the pH scale and hoping granniek will pull through with the classroom fish -- its such a wonderful thing to be doing for the students but is so difficult to put together this slow, quiet hobby with a busy classroom and energetic children sometimes!

lost the humour somewhere over the pond didn't we then?!

never mind........

...and I haven't even told you I took 2nd place in the labor day river swim, have I?  (actually, I really did! 1.5 mile right in there with the river fish, ha!)

Seriously though, that Sept 1 3:40pm post by granniek kinda looked like test strip results to me.. granniek, do you have the liquid tests up and running yet? Also, the rainwater is adding some complication - lets be sure we're all ok with that I would think.

what the flippin 'eck is the labour day swim when it's at home.

congrats anyway though :hooray:

which reminds me, i need to ring around and try to find a gym with a decent pool that doesn't charge the earth tonight. My gym membership has just gone up and I'm not happy!

thanks MW, matter of fact I'm headin out right now for my lunchtime mile (gotta relate to those fish directly  ) see all you fishy types later...

Ammonia is not listed on this test kit. How do I test for that? Yes, it is strips that I dip into the water. WalMart didn't have anything else. There are also ppm numbers listed. I did the test strip again yesterday. Everything basically stayed the same. PH dropped to 8.0. Nitrite 0, Nitrate 25 ppm.

No, I have not read an article about ammonia......tried a search, but couldn't seem to find it. Not enough time. I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and cancel this project. Last year with just the guppies all went well until I let the kids bring in the gouramis.

Thx for trying to help. Sheila
