Cigarette smoke

Questions like this really give me a twitch. Why would you need to know something like this?!

Why have you got a nervous disposition or something :p

Maybee she/he is just curious, or more likely maybee she/he smokes and wants to know if it is ok to do it around the fish tank.

Nervous...not I!!! Just despairing.

How would you get the smoke anywhere near the fish except with a concerted effort and probably some kind of special equipment?!

lol, i think they ment can it polute the water lol.
I smoked right at my 20g with a couple of fish in it, about an hour later they started to breath heavy, dunno if its linked but who knows.

thx for the replies guys, i was just wondering cause i am a smoker. But personally i never smoke in the same room where my fish is kept. Just wondering if the passive smoke would affect the fish in any way thats all..

if the tanks covered it shouldn't do too much harm! but you can never be sure

There should not be a problem... Keep the lid down and not exhale right on the water surface !!! ;)

For a long time, that's what I thought killed a couple of dwarf cichlids I'd bought (they're esp. sensitive)...tho now I'm pretty sure it was due to something else.

But, yes, nicotine is poisonous to fish. Part of the reason I always used carbon...as a partial safeguard. When I smoked indoors, I also had one of those little air cleaners. If using an air pump, not so difficult for it to get in the water...

i smoke around my fish but also wonder sometimes, while i doubt the smoke would do anything i would think that there is some danger. nicotine is one of the most leather natural pestacides. u just soak tobaco in water and BUGS BEWARE. id assume nicotine gathers on your fingers when u smoke so if u put your fingers in the water or touch the food some must transfer? i heard that there is enough nicotine in 2 cigarettes ti kill u(dont know if thats true) but by comparisson im sure if a small piece of tobacco fell into the warter and the fish ate it they would be toast.
Disclaimer: this statment is the opinion of a smoke infested brain and as such is probably not worth the cyberspace it's floating in. These are just my thoughts about smoking, i dont pretend anything is fact. :dunno:

but that wont stop me from washing my hands :D

Hi caterpillar5 :)

You have asked an excellent question about a subject that is seldom discussed here.

flea is right; nicotine is deadly poison and is used as a natural insecticide. It can also poison fish.

Have you ever noticed how places where people smoke tend to get dirty faster? This is from the smoke residue in the air settling on all the surfaces. It includes substances other than nicotine such as tars which will not do the fish any good either. I'm a smoker and I have to clean curtains and blinds more often than non-smokers do. The water I wash them in turns a dark yellow from this stuff. :X

And, while it's a good idea to wash your hands before putting them in you tanks or feeding the fish, if you are a smoker, it's an important thing to do. Even if you see no immediate problem, there could be long term risk to the fish.

OK, I must remove my cynical hat and assume the question was for general curiosity purposes, rather than suspect experimentation purposes
