I used to keep cichlids when I first got into fishkeeping a while back, but after that setup I really have no desire to go back. They are beautiful fish to be sure, but I'm just wondering what the constant allure is to them. Am I missing something? Or are they just not for me...?

Do not worry its just you
Seriously cichlids are very beautiful fish and that and the fact when you walk into the room there much like a dog swimming over waggling there bodies and you can even stoke them, i do with my oscars...
There just addictive,,,Everyone has a favourite species or breed of fish and alot love central/south american<as i do......Iam not so keen on africans but iam starting to like them more.....
Then you have oddball species which do not come in many variety's again ive only really starting getting into oddballs in the last year.....
Before i used to keep the usual community tank but theres only so much you can do with a community tank,...although pleasing on the eye i prefer large boistous cichlids that have beautiful colours and attitudes,,,when you put your hand to the glass they rush over rather than heading for the plants and shelter provided

i have to agree i can sit and wacth my dwarf cichlids for hours they have a personality and alot of attitude some as said above even interact in certain ways. i just cant get excited about a fish that just swims back and forth all day :good:

oh my ram, i could really digress :shifty:

he has an Awesome personality! he feeds from hand great little guy

Didn't your other one die? ): :rip:

I don't like cichlids, cause I can't get a tank that can fit them :D

People like cichlids because, they're really beautiful. ): Sucks that they need lotsa room.

I think a chichlid is the difference between a tank full of fish... and a FISH TANK

Its not 10 tetras swimming through a pirate ship. its your fish, that you raised from probably quite small (perhaps even fry) and now its something like 8 inches long, hanging out in its lush white sand bottom tank with tall perfectly maintained grasses and java moss laiden peices of driftwood. On the other side it can swim behind a wall of dark boulders slowly being taken by the moss themselves, and almost completely disappear. But you walk into that room and it sees you? or you turn on a light, get close to the tank, its right there, waiting for you to hopefully feed. but just watching, waiting. You get some frozen food and stick it in the tank and they come up and eat it right from your fingers as it starts to melt. Now you can even take the time to touch them or even pet them, some will swim through your hand / fingers (my discus always do :). You start to walk away and you turn to look real quick and sure as ever, its as far as the tank wall will go. watching you walk out of the room. You have to spend alot of time just watching your tank, to see what a cichlid is up to when it thinks your not around.

I think that about sums it up. No?

I think my question was answered with

I do love personality though, and I do remember it with mine. But most recently when my tank was last stocked my Bichir had plenty of personality for me! Maybe I will go back to cichlids in the future. Thanks for revamping the excitement guys!!! :good:
