Im giving away the oscar that was in my 30 (too small tank) and i was wondering what cichlids i can put in there. The theme is a central american rocky lake and is sort of like a volcanic landslide. Do you think it is ok for a firemouth cichlid. Green terror? If there is any other south and central american cichlids that i can keep or would be good in a 30 gallon please tell me. And dont say "its up to you" just give me your opinion.

were you going to keep single specimins , 2 of the same species , or a mated pair ? Firemouths would probably be o.k. ether way . Green Terrors are beautiful fish ,and can easily equal that beauty with aggression .Be aware .1 specimin would probably be o.k in a tank that size , I kept 1 in a mixed singles [ cichlid ]species tank about 10 years ago and he and a salvini had to be evicted for menacing the tanks other occupants . They went from a 70 gal to a 55 by themselves , and they fought constantly with each other . They were tired , I was tired from watching them fight .That is not to say this is always the case some may not be as aggressive as mine was[were] .Any way I ended up giving them away . You could try west africans [kribs ,or an african butterfly cichlid] are also good choices for a tank that size , may be just not together with mated pairs of each .

Well I am now very partial to the german blue rams :D so that is my suggestion. You can see mine on my website in my siggy :D

how about firemouths, Blue Acara, Severums :D I have those 3 and they are doing fine, no real fights yet and i'm hoping that it won't happen. I was so close in getting a green terror but my LFS advice me not to get them as my tank is too small and they pretty damn aggressive, too bad cause they are such a beautiful fish....

"that's a good Idea " you could fit several rams in a tank that size .

yeah -- Bolivian Rams are nice too, and *i think* they are a little hardier than German Blue Rams as well.

cheers!

Thats what I keep reading and hearing on websites with info for the german blues... but I just want to add my 2cents. I have had mine for about a week or so now and I have to say that they are just as hardy as any other fish I've had. I've had NO trouble with them. NO trouble acclimating them or anything. All I did was to put the bag in the water for about 20-30 min and then just put them in the tank. I left the lights on in the tank. It is a planted tank so that may have helped in making them feel secure. This also could just be good luck for me. (This is the first time I've had them.) But I am sooooooo glad I ignored everything said (bad) about them and went ahead and got them because I am enjoying them soooooo much!! Both pairs spawned already. One pair two days after being in the tank and the other three days :D. I did loose the eggs.. but it was their first time too. :D

Good luck with your decision! Let us know what you get :D

hey amber- even though i dont think a week is long enough to decide if a fish is hardy or not, i think that you make a valid point. the germans probably arent *that* much more sensitive than bolivians, but there are tons of factors to consider...

i dont think the germans are going to be as sensitive as...discus, or even cardinal tetras, but they are most likely less tolerant of sudden water parameterand temperature changes, elevated nitrates and other toxins in the water, etc

just my thoughts on the subject ;)

ps. congrats on the spawns!!

I got a firemouth and a green terror. The green terror will eventually out grow the tank but i have a huge lfs called fish world lol that takes any cichlids back. The first few weeks the green terror was well.... being a terror to the firemouth but i think they have devloped territories now and dont fight very often.

A pair of convicts
German blue rams (look at my pic in sig)
A pair of angelfish
Firemouth
a blood parrot

I kept 2 firemouths and 2 jewel cichlids in a 20 for a while. Then the jewels started to breed and killed the firemouths. Don't get Jewels of the opposite sex and put them in a tank of many fish. This = Rest In Pieces :rip: But anyway, firemouths are good fish that can hold their ground. I give em the thumbs up :pepsi:
