Hello all, well i went to petsmart and decided i was going to buy myself a cichlid and i did out of the assorted cichlid tank. Question is i dont know what species my cichlid is, i dont have a picture but i can describe him to you. He is light blue all over and has black bands on both sides and the tops of his fins are black. Any ideas??

thanks all!!!

You've just described half a dozen species.

Unfortunately because it is from an assorted tank it could be any number of species, or even a hybrid.

Cichlids are very aggressive, and if you keep them you must plan what you want to keep in advance what you want to work, and buy them only if you know what they are. I can't help but suggest you take it back and start off from scratch.

There are many great resources on the web that can help you out. Start off on my website below and then check out the links page there.

does he look like this??

Pseudotropheus socolofi

or like this one? Your description is a little difficult to understand.......

Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos "Maingano"

Honestly Exile, your attempts and well meaning are well noted but a little futile IMO. not just cause the poster never came back, but because of the sheer amount of blue cichlids

Don't forget Saulosi, Cyn. Afra, Lombaroi, Johanni.... there is no lack of them l :)

Hehehe -- I was sort of just trying to narrow it down for the guy. Plus I'm really bored right now and have no life. But yeah, you're right. :S

I don't think it's a Pseudotropheus. Looks more like a Cynotilapia afra of some sort--maybe Blue Reef. Hard to tell the colors of this fish because of the pic.... got other photos of it?

after some more research:
I'm almost positive that that the fish in that pic is a Cynotilapia afra.
But because i can't see the colors well (it all looks green).....can't tell which afra locale it is yet.

it is the three fishes on the bottom of this page. allmost impossible to catch a picture of him cause he is very fast.

Pictures

panaque?! :p

No, thank you! i still must say i think it looks like a pseudotropheus :)
