can you put any different fish with cichids?

Yes, lots of fish can go with cichlids. But it depends on what type of cichlid, some are so aggressive no fish can go with them.

which ones should i stay away from... if not which ones are ok to be able to mix with other fish

Theres over 1000 different species! I cant name them all. What size tank do you have? Why dont you go to your pestore and say waht cichlids you like, but dont get them. then post em here and we will tell you if its a good one for fish or not. Most cichlids can go with dither fish, dither fish are any little type of fish that is quick enough to get away from the bigger cichlids, and it distracts the cichlids from eachother or makes them feel comfortable in their tank.

ive found dwarf cichlids such as rams and kribs can go well in a community.

I keep african cichlids with clown loaches and a RTBS. They all get along well
