I have an office betta in a 5 gal hex tank. I am obviously taking him home with me for the christmas vacation from december 22 - january 2. My question is when i take him home, it will be in a 2.5 gal. The water in the 5 gallon, should i leave in as is? Should I empty it all out, should I empty most? if i leave it in, should i put anything in the water to keep it fresh, i suppose would be the word?

Any help would be appreciated!

Just leave the 5 gallon running at the office if it has a filter.

ya, if you have a filter leave it running but I think you might need to put something in to make sure the bacteria are still alive. Maybe a dead shrimp?

if there isn't a filter, just empty it and re fill it when you come back I suppose

There is a filter, but is there anythign else i can add to it rather than a dead shrimp?

can it possibly be something *not* dead? i don't want to kill any fish or anything. :(

Prawn? Fish food? Anything that will rot and keep rotting enough to last you through the holidays. Unless you find a way to set a system that would deposit the proper amount of ammonia everyday, you're stuck with letting something rot in there.

jus an idea but would a holiday fish block that is made to feed the fish any good? jus do a larger water change when you get back or even better take your filter home in some of the water and run it at your house. Jus dont keep it out of the water to long. :D
Think tht both would be ok jus wait for someone to back me up on it first though!
:good: Greg

I can't take the filter home, as it is the only 5 gal hax tank i have, the other 5 gal is a rectangle. I suppose i could use fish food, i really really don't want to kill a fish to live in there, and then after 2 weeks taking out the bleck dead fish...not really what i would like.

I think they were kidding about the dead fish. :p One or two of those food blocks would probably be excellent since they're pretty big chunks and would take a while to rot. You could even find a small plastic container that would sink (could put a marble in the container to make it sink) and put the blocks in there so the remnants would be easy to remove once you got back.

And then when I get back to the office, i suppose i remove the tub and then just add the fish back after acclimating him?

Aside from doing a water change after removing the tub, yes, you just put the fish back in. It might have to be a larger water change than usual...maybe 50-70% but no huge cleaning involved other than what you usually do to clean the tank. The tub should keep all the big particles in the tub and not in the gravel.
