chlorine/chloramine remover

anyone know anything about tetramin's Aquasafe product? I've been using it all along with my small tanks, but now I can't just use an old milk jug for water changes...

anyways, my question is: how bad would it be if, say, i filled a bucket with 2.5 gallons of water but put in enough neutralizer for 3 gallons? you know, used too much product but not by much.

if necessary, i'll just calibrate the bucket. in that instance, what does anybody know about permanent marker and water interactions?

I was wondering the same thing 3-4 years ago for my 5 gallon so I e-mailed Tetra. They told me I could use an eye dropper and put in 8 drops per gallon of water. I've been doing it ever since. I just put the 8 drops into a 1 gallon container of water, put the lid on and shake, and then add to the tank.

the problem isn't that i'm not sure of how much chemical i'm adding ~ it's that i'm not sure of the amount of water!

i am literally using just a 5-gallon bucket and it has no interior graduations or markings. so its hard to say when i've got 2 gallons, 2.5 gallons, or 3 gallons of water in it. i'm just wanting someone to verfiy or deny that an extra 1/16 of a teaspoon of neutralizer won't hurt.

I doubt 1/16 of a teaspoon would hurt. A lot of people are not very scientific in their measurements (of dechlorinator) and don't have problems. Now if your talking about a couple of extra teaspoons per five gallons it might be different.

I used a magic marker on the outside of my 5 gallon buckets. I have both orange buckets and white buckets and as long as I'm filling them up in a room that has light I can see the marks from the inside of the bucket.

Do it in halves......add 1.5 gallons to your bucket, and add half the recomended dose for 3 gallons, until u fill the tank. And then tip the rest of the water u dont use on the garden, or on some plants!!! Am i a thinker or what!!

I wouldn't worry tha much you could put a teaspoon in a five gallons wont hurt. Most of the stuff on there says that you can overdose with no adverse affects. better safe than sorry.

anyway, the ingredients that neutralize the chlorine/chloramie are rated for an x dose of chlorine in your tap water. Some people have lots of chlorine while others have very little.

They just make sure the qty they put on the bottle will treat your water if you have lots of chlorine in it.

The products in it are harmless to fish and basically, adding a litre of stuff in your tank will just make the water bubble and do little hram, if any, to the fish

If your using the aquasafe like me, are you using the small 100ml bottle?, if so the side of the bottle has a clear bit with small lines raised from the bottle, they indicate 5mls. And if you buy the bigger bottles the have the measurer in the cap for 5mls half the cap and 10mls the whole cap. And writing on the other side of the bucket with marker pen is a bloody good idea,now why didnt i think of that

I always add a bit extra, just to be on the safe side. I use Stress Coat and AquaPlus, so they're relatively good for the fish anyway. Since it replaces their slime coat and such, and has herbal extracts in it, it can't be too bad.

My fish seem happy.

I used to get so stressy doing the water changes with the ole bucket brigade that every week i used to catch myself doing the same thing.... thinking "it's a 180 litre tank so I need xxx amount of conditioner..." and forgetting that i was only changing 25% - so my fishies got overdosed 300% for a good few weeks! Eeek!! But it doesn't seem to have done them any harm. i did email tetra or whoever makes what i use and they say it's very very difficult to overdose, you'd have to empty a whole bottle of the stuff into the tank at least.

So i wouldn't worry about a teaspoonful here or there. But try not to be as dumb as me anyhow!!

When we used a 5gallon bucket we did the same thing polardbear does. Our bucket was white and the water level showed through fine.

I use gallon jugs now and I just put 1/8 tsp in each one even though it's supposed to be 1/10th.

that is soooo how i've been doing it for the last 6 months.
