i just bought sand opened it and rinsed it, then stupidly i realized i forgot to read the bag so i read it and it says chilid sand

as far as i kno chilids like high level pH

and corys like low pH

is it still suitable? the sand is made of crushed shells and such to immitate african sand(high pH)

but cory's live in the amazon waters with low pH

should i go buy different sand? if so what kind?

please help!! :shout: :/

Do you have African or South American (New World) Cichlids? Africans need a high pH and hardness, New Worlds will probably tolerate it but prefer it around neutral or slightly lower.

The sand will be fine so long as it is fine enough (there is usually a scale based on mm), its the pH that is bad.
the sand is made of crushed shells
Do you have crushed coral, not sand? Look at the substrate, if it is as fine as sand on a beach it is OK to use, if its is larger and more gravel-like it is not OK for cories.

The more important matter here is the fish, not your choice of substrate. If you have Africans your choice is basically, the cories or the cichlids.

hmn I think I may have been misunderstood

I dont have any fish yet but a few black neon tetras

I dont have or want any cichlids

the problem is I want to switch to sand to buy some corys
but by accident i bought sand that is very fine but is made for chichlids and has crushed shells(which highers the pH)

is this sand still suitable for my future cory?

what is their pH comfort range?

hi,if you go to ***.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/G_1.PHP (not sure if this link is allowed) & click on the type of cory you would like to get in the future it will give you loads of information about them including there ph range.from what iv read most of the common corys like the ph to be between 6 & 7.5,some like it a bit lower but dont think they like it much higher.hope this helps! :)

Even if it didn't make the pH higher, I would still not use it, if it is crushed corals, then the corys barbels will wear off very quickly (because the coral is sharp) and they will die because they won't be able to find food
