few quick questions about cherry's...

how often do they breed?

how long do you think it would take if i bought 10 of them to get a breeding colony , from which I could sell some on from?

is there any special care i should provide for the young?

Once females are mature enough to breed your probably looking at having them drop shrimplets roughly every month, starting with 10 shrimp I would only look at starting to sell off excess shrimp after approximatley 6 months (possibly more depending on tank temps and predators in the tank)

Cherry shrimp are probably the most forgiving of all the shrimp with regards to pH and dH and temp, if anything just ensure your water is't too soft, other wise they will have trouble moulting.

thanks for the reply. i dont live in a soft water area so that wont be a problem. its a high tech tank which there going into.. doesing ferts and liquid carbon wont be a problem will it?

liquid carbon will drop your PH a fair bit? My PH was as low as 4.9 at times with my CO2 set up, so just keep an eye on it :)

If its a community tank they wee ones may get snapped up! I added a load of shrimp to my 360L heavily planted tank. I never saw them again haha.

thanks i'll keep an eye on that. im using yeast and liquid every now and then.
the tanks empty at the moment im thinking of just having it as a shrimp tank with maybe some small tetra in it. its only 60L (i think)

Don't slack on WC. Shrimp to not do well with being neglected. Make sure you feed them well. More food means more babies. But don't over feed there is a fine line here.

I kind of neglected my shim tank for a few months. It also got a bit hot in the house. Shrimp don't like heat. I lost a few of my older females. I only had 3 cherry shrimp left I thought it was over. Now I have 20 babies that survived and are growing well. Some females are berried and they are not even full grown. I also have tiger shrimp and they are doing really well I lost a few to neglect but I have found a bunch of babies so I am not worried. My big female is berried again.

Water change water change. Keep water as clean as you can and you will have lots of happy breeding shrimp. WC are very very important for shrimp. Now that I got the shrimp keep thing down after a bit of trial and error I am getting some low grade CRS. See how that goes.

thanks for the advice =] :good: i should be doing a water change a week on the tank anyway because of the dosing of ferts. i also have a very large filter for the tank conceding its size

Final note - watch the shrimp dont get sooked up by the filter!! I found quite a few shrimp in the filter when i cleaned it!

There is a lot to watch for with shrimp! But by far the most interesting IMO :)

i was going to put some netting over the filter the inlet is powerful :good: thanks for all the advice i was thinking of getting blue pearl shrimp (a blue version of the cherry shrimp)

I have a dark substrate so the blue pearls don't look as nice or don't stand out. But I do love the way they look. Just don't mix the reds and blues you will end up with poor color.

What are these "grades" of shrimp? Do the low grade ones hang out on street corners spitting at passers by and dropping litter, while the high grade ones work as consultant obstetricians and sip champagne?

i think the grades refer to there colouration

snowflake if i was going to mix them it would be with amano's and they cant inter breed with them thanks for the advice though :good:

Yes grades in shrimp usually applies to thier colour and its usually in relation to Crystal shrimp, as far as I know with cherry shrimp the other colour variations are just given different names such as Rili, Sakura, Plum.

I started with 20 in March or April (something thereabouts) and at a rough guess I have 200 now with at least 10 berried females atm and starting to sell them. They are in their own tank, I do weekly waterchanges and feed them every night. Must be doing something right.
