hi,

so yesterday I got 4 shrimps one of them females with eggs, black eggs and she's been venting the eggs all the time.

now this morning they were all weak so I restarted my aquaclear filter 20 I have in the 5 gallon, I stopped it because I don't want the eggs to hatch and the tiny shrimps get stuck in the filter.

so
- can you suggest to me a small filter something where tiny shrimps won't get stuck in?
- they're 4 cherry shrimps, do I need to feed them in my plant aquarium? 30% of the space is plants.

thank you.

if I were to recommend a filter for small fish or inverts it would be a sponge filter. The only problem is they take up Space inside the tank and require an air pump. I would take a sponge filter media pad and cut it down a little. Then slit a hole in the top of it and slide it over the intake as a pre-filter. It will need to be rinsed about once a week but it will keep the shrimp from getting sucked up. :good: Hope this helps!

If its a 5 gallon with only shrimp then you don't need a filter, just more plants.

yes only plants and 4 cherry shrimps right now. I want it to be my plant and shrimp tank.

yeah well I have to wait for my plants to grow but I think the sponge thing makes also sense... the only reason I have the aquaclear is to basically break the surface of the water to oxigenate... I don't think I need filtering with 4 shrimps.

thanks to both of you!!

*** how about feeding? do I need to feed them or there is enough stuff in a 5 gallon plant tank for them to find their own food... remember just 4 cherry shrimps ***

an airstone can also be used for oxygenation. For feeding they will eat planaria and algea that may form
on the leaves of the plants. Algea wafers can also be used but for 4 shrimp it shouldn't be needed.

Plants produce oxygen, now you don't need a filter or a airpump ;)

Flow in a planted tank is a necesity IMO. :p Even if there is no co2 injection or anything special. In fact I'm not sure if the plants will do well in that setup possibly due to lack of nutrients with no fish and a very small amount of shrimp with a very low bioload. Supplemental nutrients may be necessary such as a low stocking of fish or liquid fertilization.

Just keep in mind they produce CO2 over night but that shouldn't be of a considerable amount to notice!

I have a U1 filter which I have just lined the filter intake with foam rather than sponge so super fine, too small for a shrimp to go through. In effect my filter is only there to distribute nutrients around the tank rather than filter the water, like you I'm expected my plants to be doing that.

Pogostemon Hel, Dwarf Hairgrass, Gloss and an unknown bulb :p
