Hi, i adopted a female cherry platy a few weeks ago. But i have not been able to find much info about them. some say they could be cross from a balloon molly, or just a dwarf platy? My female is cherry red, with a high top fin making her look like the balloon shape. She doesn't have a pent spine or big belly tho. the closes fish i can find it the image below. I know this pic is heavy pregnant but you get the idea i hope. Are there any websites that have them listed?

sorry my camera is not good to take the pics. i did post some of my tank but close-up shots do not turn out at all.

Balloon platies are known in the hobby so you may well have one. It will not be a platy molly cross since that is not possible.

Now that i had her for some times, i noticed her shaped has changed. she isn't as fat and wide.. she thinned out slightly. So she may just be a regular red platy.

There is a website I visit from time to time (just to look at, I don't buy from it anymore) and I have seen a couple times that a balloon platy has been listed (very red like the one you are showing) and another time someone had one they called a cherry or some name close to that and it too looked like what you described. I have never seen either kind anyplace else than on that site. I am not sure if they were really platies or if the people had misnamed what they were.

I think they just gave it the name bc of the colour. i think if anything it is a dwarf platy as it is not really long enough as a normal red platy i have seen or had before.
