Checking Sex Of My Blue Acara

Maybe you could take him back to the LFS. Or try to rehome him If you feel the need for it. It is a shame that they look so much a like, and they are sucha pretty fish, they just get too large for most people and too agressive. Glenbo thought that one of his/her acaraas was a green terror, but then for some reason rehomed it. Glenbo found out it was an acara. That is just too bad, and It does look more like a Green Terror to my untrained eyes.

I did assume that my True Blue Acara was a GT x BA hybrid because its such a rarity to see a 'Aequedins Pulcher' so rare that I havent seen anybody else on this site with one, they all seem to have either 'Green Acaras' or 'Gold Acaras' so i assumed it was something different....and the shop fed me a load of crap about it being a Hybrid when I rang them.

So I conbtacted a breeder/Collecter of Aequedins species and he sent me a really detailed email explaining me the different markings and colours of different Aequedins species etc so I liek to think of my self quite educated about them now after a lot of reading/studying about them.

I didnt rehome her tho! shes still in my tank paired up with a Aequedins Latifrons :)

In the photo the Latifrons is to the left and the Pulcher to the right....Latifrons are more gold in colouration and have a lighter body,Pulcher have almost blue and black markings and more intense blue 'lightning bolts' plus the silver fin edging.

Just out of interest how big a tank would be required for a single GT as a wet pet? With maybe a pleco in there for clean up purposes?

Cheers

Not sure what to do :( I really like my GT, but it's not exactly fair on my other fish to have to rehome them, plus buy a bigger tank anyway.

So Minxfishy - if I got a 500L like yours for example, I could have the GT as well as a Sev and some others?

She's only 3" a the moment, but I did read they reach sexual maturity then, so will she start getting really aggressive? She was only aggressive to a Pearl Cichlid I had, she was mainly protecting the other fish and shrimps. Maybe she was protecting them as she'd like to eat them in future :( :( :( She goes an amazingly dark colour when food is about. She is a stunning fish, and only small still :(

Tropical, a single GT with a plec, 55g, 4ft 18" w, minimum.

Grumpy, With a 500L yes you can try with a Severum, Oscar etc like I have, you will still need to be on the lookout for aggression issues and be prepared to remove/rehome if any problems arise.

Thanks. I'll have to have a think about what to do. I suppose I could try and swap my GT for one of the Blue Acaras I saw in Seapets, wasn't too keen as there was a dead fish floating around in their tank

It would be nice to get an even bigger tank, try and get it for the same time as we move. I'll have to reassess my budget.

Would anyone on here be interested in buying her, if I do sell, do you think? Or are they hard to rehome?

Fairly easy to rehome I would expect, particuarly as she is young, so easier to try and mix with other large cichlids.

As I assume its a BA you wanted, I would try to swap her, but not from a tank of dead fish. Be aware even an Acara could be too aggressive for the rams/keyholes, less likely to be a problem though I used to have two acaras with rams with no problems.

Why not keep it in your 50g? it will be ok for a few years and since they say 55G minimum it will probably be ok for life.

Just rehome the Ram ,Keyhole and Armano Shrimp.

Maybe put the ram with the betta and the Armano to?

I guess I could keep her and my plec in my 50G. Could I have any other fish in there, like tiger barbs for example?

I suppose I could get a slightly larger new tank and have my Betta, Keyhole, Rams, Khuli loaches and shrimps in there - if they'd be OK together... I'd have to rehome the tetras and rosy barbs....

TB's will likely not survive an attack from a GT Im afraid. Seriously Giant Danios :good: Lovely active fish.

Oh, the Danios would be OK? I didn't know whether you suggested them for a larger tank. Yes, they are quite nice.

OK thanks. Definitely food for thought!

I'm not sure whether OH would allow me to have 3 tanks, and not sure whether I could keep up with the maintenance for 3 tanks. Hmmm.

I'll see how it goes, and make a decision once we move. There's no aggression issues just now.

If taht 1st pic is unedited, pretty awesome. I think it's obvious that while both are great fish, pulcher > latifrons.

Yeh its all unedited man, straight from my camera...infact it looks better in real life, check the video in my sig.
