I have recently got my 6ft tank (something like 900L or so), and have swapped over all of my plants from the 4ft, my previous tank.

These plants were really thriving in my previous tank, no doubt due to the regular fertiliser and the planting sustrate.

Stupidly, I was in such a hurry to set this up I didn't think about providing a planting substrate under the sand (and OH didn't want to ruin the look of the play sand), so my poor plants are in play sand at the moment with very little to live on and it's starting to show.

I wanted to ask the cheapest way to fertilise my plants and get the growing again without spending too much. I have run out of liquid ferts and can't afford any more for a good few days, I also have tetra CompleteSubstrate but OH won't let me put any in as it's the wrong colour and will make the sand look dirty

So, I was thinking of the tabs/sticks that you put into the substrate near to the plants and I also wanted to ask about the cheapest way to fertilise the tank water as I know not all plants take everything through the roots.
I mainly have hardy plants now - java fern on bogwood, anubias on bogwood, amazon sword, water wisteria, cabomba and a few other small plants that I don't know the name of. The plants suffering most are the swords!

Any help at all would be appreciated, I really don't want to give up on my plants but can't afford to really splash out (although a co2 system is on the cards for the new year :) ).

best thing to do is dose using salts (the EI method) cheap as chips and you can put exactly what you want in, if you want more N, then put more into your mix. its fully customisable.

you would be best of getting something like aquabasis or DRL akadama. if you get akadama just dose the water coloumn nice and well and it will help to absorb some for the plant roots.
