I have always used mechanical timers and run all the lights that I can from a single timer. The £7.99 for 3 sounds very good to me. I usually end up spending about $10 for a single timer that has a "heavy duty" rating on it, that is about £6 each. The rating is meaningless in terms of watts or amps but it includes a grounded outlet which the regular duty timers for about $3 do not. Since most of my tank lights are DIY, they all have a grounded plug on them and need the more expensive timers. A digital timer here is about $30 so I have never had one. Since the cheaper mechanicals work fine, why spend more? I have one that runs the 3 lights on tanks on one of my custom stands along with the solenoid for the CO2 that feeds that group of tanks.
