Would it be possible to build a filter using a submersible pump, a plexiglass box, and some tubing?

I was thinking of using a quiet small submersible pump, which will pump water UP, out of the aqaurium and into the top of the plexiglass box. The water will then pour down onto a layer of sponge, which will remove debris. The water will continue down into a lower level filled with some kind of Biological bacteria friendly material. From there, the water will pour out through a small hole in the side, and will follow a tube down back into the aquarium, being pulled by gravity....

Any comments or suggestions? Maybe different plans?

its weird that something like that owuld come up, I just saw a great model, very similar. Do you have any building steps? Howd you fix the bottle to the powerhead? and did you use silicome to patch up the bottle?

you might want to consider having an overflow from your tank so you don't have an ugly pump sitting in your tank, and you also don't have to worry about hanging the filter somewhere above the tank. I would just have the overflow run to the filter on the floor and then pump it back up from the filter. just a thought

and for future reference you might want to give people a little more time to respond, it's not an emergency, so relax B)

This sounds like a wet/dry filter above the tank. Most people tend to use a wet/dry filter in their sump however which is much easier and eliminates the need to have equipment in the tank.

Use and overflow setup, the following link describes how to make a siphon model.

Skimmerless Overflow

Then construct a wet/dry filter in your sump. If you need more information on both I can post a few links.
