Standard kids play sand (from stores like Argos) would be fine, depends whether your after black sand or paler sand. Obviously, the play sand is the paler/yellow-brown kind. Specific aquarium sand is fine too. Just be careful not to get live sand as I'm pretty sure it's for saltwater setups.

I have Argos Play sand, and at only £3, its a lot better than aquarium sand which costs £5 for a tiny bag.
Argos play sand is quite light.

I've got Argos playsand in most of my tanks and all my fish (assorted tetras, loaches, cories, barbs, a few plecs, Endler's + shrimps) are fine on it.

I have argos playsand, It's cheap, easy to clean, Looks really nice, The fish love it and are all fine, and I never got any cloudy water with it either! :hyper:

I use argos play sand and I love it as do my fish! looks so much better than gravel in my opinion and is fantastic value!

Love the staffy in your pic by the way!

I've been thinking about changing to sand for ages.. didn't realise that I could use play sand?

Does it need rinsing at all, or just put it straight in ?

rinse it, defo rinse it.
I like play sand, its cheap.

If you don't want to use play sand, you can always use pool filter sand

Just rinsing it in a bucket will work. All the lighter particles will float to the top and you can just dump the water and keep on rinsing until it runs clean
