As the topic says: I want to take out the gravel in my tank and put in a sand bottom but I don't want to take the tank down. If I have to I will, its just a big hassle as I only have two tanks at home of which one is 5 US gallons( won't hold my pleco ).

Remove your fish, and store them in a spare tank or bucket with water from your fish tank. Heavily rinse the sand until the water you are cleaning it in remains clear(ish!). Then remove your gravel and simply poor in the sand. It really is a simple process.. and after you add the sand just replace any plants/ornaments and re-add your fish. :)

From cleaning the sand, to replacing your fish back into the tank - It shouldn't take more than 2 hours. :)

That doesn't sound too bad. Is there a calculator or a guide for how much sand to use in a tank...based on dimension or volume?

It's simple, you are looking for a thin layer of sound, maybe 2-3cm's deep at most. :)

i recently changed from gravel to sand.as said before just relocate fish for a short time.i got myself a large water but from homebase and put my heater in it.scooped out all the gravel (i used a new dustpan)and then added the rinsed sand.i filled up a jug with sand and lowered it to the bottom of the tank so as not to cause to much clouding.my water was clear and ready for fish within an hour :good:
