Changing From Gravel To Sand..... :)

Have been thinking of doing this for a while but ive been put off by the messy look as I have a large 250L community tank which includes a pooping machine fully grown Bn plec! If I bought black sand do you think this would solve the problem? Also how do you calculate how much you will need please?

Just done an other water check there and everything is fine. My PH is actually lower, but this will be due to all the additional bogwood in my tank. Amonia - 0 :) which is the most important thing.

Gilli... I have a 240ltr tank, 2 bags of argos play sand is more than enough. Which is 30kg in weight.

Good luck :good:

Ok hubby finished work early, took kids out...an hour n half later...fish out, gravel out...sand in...fish in...job done, just leaving lights out for an hour n ill take pics...corys loving it already, :) x

Yay :) i am still deciding what to do about the tank i pick up Saturday, comes with gravel but do I want playsand instead...

Looking good, I only switched from white coral gravel to black quartz gravel 3 months ago, but I'm really tempted to do this.

I can't justify spending more money on a rescape now, but I'm thinking I should, or should I? I don't know, I prefer the black look but it took ages to get my tank to look like this and I doubt I'll get it back the same if I did change, some of my plants now have massive root systems and trying to bury them all again doesn't appeal at all. But it looks great.

I think I need a magic 8 ball or a ouija board to help me decide :-(

you want to go back to white/pale sand again? go for it!! your tank is lovely but i do like the lighter sand TBH. :)

and thank you all, im getting more plants in the next few days so ill update pics as i go :)

Glad to hear :) the female guppy on the second pic looks just like one of my females which doesnt have much colour on it as its about 6 months old

both my females are preggers, hope the change to sand hasnt stressed them too much an hope i dont suffer a mini cycle...i wanna be a grandma haha

Its important to check your water paremeters just in case of any spikes like when i did my change and put the fish in a bucket i noticed 4-5 guppy fry and noticed that my fry gave birth for the first time and i might say spawning may mostly take place when lower in temperature (which the bucket water was colder) but the problem was that my 6 month old male guppy was trying to breed with the 6 month old female (sister) so there could be inbreeding
