I currently have 2 tanks set-up, a 5 foot planted with a variety of Rainbows, Tetras, various catfish etc. My other tank is 4' housing Malawi Cichlids. We're about to have some building work done and resultant from this I have to move both tanks (a major task I am not looking forward to!!) One of the things I want to do when this changeover takes place is to put the big filter (Tetratec ex1200) currently on the 5 foot onto the smaller tank and the 2 smaller filters each 700 lph currently on the smaller tank will be switched to the 5 foot. Can anyone think of any reason why I cant just switch over ie with the mature media intact?

No. Why not??

i would run them both together for 4 weeks then just take the internal off.

I can't see an issue with a direct switch, assuming they both have about the same bio-load. If the bio-loads are different, be prepaired for a mini-cycle on the more heavily stocked tank :good:

Thanks for the various comments. The 700's are actually both external. Loading on both tanks should be similar - suck it and see I guess!!
