Hi,
I admit a dread to changing my filter. Its one of those green plastic foam things. Do I just chuck it out with all my lovely good bacteria and insert a new one? Am i going to get Nitites etc going through the roof? :/

Stuart

Firstly are you changing the whole filter or just the foam inserts?

If its the whole filter then the best bet is to run the new filter alongside the old one for a couple of weeks to get the bacteria built up.

How many inserts have you got in the filter as the last thing you want to do is get rid of ALL of the bacteria on it. If you've got more than one insert change 1 and leave it a few weeks before changing the others. If there is only insert in the filter you can place a new one in the tank for a couple of weeks to get the bacteria growing on it.

Just out of curiosity why are you changing the foam, most people just wash them out in TANK water and put them back in again, unless they're falling apart or irreversibly clogged there is no reason to change them.

good point.
The pump isn't pumping very effectively, but perhaps a really good clean would be better before giving up on it and putting a new one in. I'll give it a go.
Thanks
Stuart
