Changing Filter Media?

Alright so my 37G came with a hood where the filter and lights are all built in. My filter cartridge says to change to every 2-4 weeks. I thought that you are suppose to keep it forever and just rinse off every month or so because the filter catches bacteria that is good for the tank. Where if I change it once a month wont it be like starting over again?

Keep it until it literally falls apart. Rinse it in tank water when it gets too clogged.
