Hi all as posted a few days ago I have changed my filter To a fx4 opted to save a few pounds and not get the fx6 a few days into running it I have noticed a drop in my tank temperature from 80f to around 76-77f probably a better temperature for the fish but not the temperature they have lived at and not the temperature my heater should be putting out , I’m now running my heater at 84f to get the 80f Iv always had introduced a second thermometer at the opposite end of the tank to make sure the temp is accurate, is my heater dying ? Or is the enlarged filter rate making it harder for the water to warm as it is being cycled through so many times ,?

Not 100% sure if your heater is dying or not... keep an eye on it. If you want to know for sure, take it out of the tank, and put it in a unheated 5g bucket. Plug it in and wait for it to heat up.

The larger filter/stronger flow could have something to do with it though.

I did do that but it was only a 10 litre bucket as hit to temp very fast I’m convinced that the water isn’t staying in the tank long enough to heat straight away , but then if this is the case by bumping the heater surly eventually it will reach the temperature the heater is reading . I dunno lol I’m just watching like a hawk atm my fish are healthy so I’m guessing a few degree change wouldn’t harm them but It bugs the life out of me not keeping consistency in my water lol ocd I guess

Don't forget the air tempertaure has dropped by over 10C in the last few weeks. Not sure about where you are, but here in the South Its not yet cool enough for the heating to come on. But either way the room temp is noticeably cooler and more pleasant. Two weeks ago I did not need a heater and my tanks were all above 27C, now all my heaters are in use again.

It could just be that your heater is having to work harder, or even that your calibration was always off but this was masked by the higher room temps.

I’m in the West Midlands and it hasn’t been the best of weather even for the uk i actually didn’t think of that just seemed to happen directly after changing my filter I’m not worried as such as my fish are not hard to keep and require exact temps

Yeah room temp really dropped here (Ireland) too. Hope the temp stabilises for you and fish are all ok.

I’m having consistent readings on the thermometers just not reading the same as my heater and thanks mate

Are you speaking of the heaters “thermometer”? (The little gauge on the side)

These are often be inaccurate for what the heater is actually putting out. Take my 29g tank for example: The heater gauge shows it’s putting out 72F, but the tank is actually at 78F.

Yeah my my heater thermostat is saying 84 and my tanks two thermometers are saying 79-80 depending on the side of the tank

Heaters are rarely accurately calibrated. They need to be set to whatever setting gives the temperature you want.
