Change To Sand

Hi, just recently set up a new tank and have quite a large stoney substrate and want to change to sand for the benefit of my fish, just wanted to know info on cleaning and how to change it ect
 
Hi, just recently set up a new tank and have quite a large stoney substrate and want to change to sand for the benefit of my fish, just wanted to know info on cleaning and how to change it ect

first, remove the fish. not an absolute necessity, but many like to.

then, with the filter running, remover the old substrate. I'd leave the tank full for this.
leave the tank to 'settle/clear.
switch off the heater and filter.
remove 50% of the water.
after giving the sand a thorough wash.
fill an ice-cream tub/take away dish, with sand.
slowly place the container in the water.
when the container is on the bottom. slowly pour the sand out.
gently do this till all the sand is in, and evenly spread.
top the tank back up.
leave the tank to settle/clear.
turn on the heater and filter.
replace the fish.

thats how I'd do it.
 
Will it harm the fish if I leave them in there?? I have quite a few that's all and there a #29### to catch

I think its more a case of which causes the least stress on the fish. for me, that means leaving the fish in.
