i was thinking, if i take all my fish back and be left with,
1x blue acara *very agressive for a blue acara*
1x clown knife fish.
1x upsidedown catfish.
2x breeding convicts.
2x flying foxes.

and get the following.

1x Jaguar Cichlid.
1x Red Devil,

OR

1x Red Terror Cichlid.

Advise please.

Thank You.

Would have to be a VERY big tank for that stocklist, not to mention if you do get a jag/RD/RT then some fish would most likely be eaten/killed (flying fox and upside down catfish, clown knife might be beaten, blue acara also).

Out of interest what size tank is it? Clown knifes get huge and when grown will most likely eat your other fish.

250G

:)

do what you think i should change in the tank and what should i get??

If you plan on keeping the clown knife, I would rehome all other fish as it will most likely eat them as they grow. For tankmates I wouldn't have the more aggressive cichlids (jaguar/RT/RD) though in a larger tank aggression is less of an issue, I wouldn't personally risk it.

I'd go for large, more peaceful tankmates for the clown knife. Examples could be fire eels, larger polypterus, datnoids, tinfoil barbs, large catfish, but make sure the size difference isn't too great as you don't want any fish to end up on the menu, and remember the different growth rates of the fish. eg. CK's grow fast when smaller, so might outstrip slower growing fish that wern't on the menu when introduced, but a few months down the line could well be.

EDIT: As this is in the NW cichlid section, possible tankmates could be 'mellower' large cichlids, oscars, severums, depending on tank dimensions maybe peacock bass. Though individual personalities can influence stocking with cichlids a lot, so you might have a super aggressive oscar, but I think generally an oscar should be OK. Some people do keep the more aggressive cichlids (such as red devils) with CK's, I wouldn't personally do it but if you have a back up option you may be willing to risk it in a large tank.

oh ok, he/she died anyway :( getting a refund from the store :)

i was thinking in going with,
1x Jaguar,
1x Midas,
1x Red terror.

will that be fine for them???

So for the 250 gallons (I'm presuming US gallons) you intend to stock 1x red terror, 1 x midas, 1 x jaguar cichlid? Returning the blue acara, flying fox etc.

Whats the dimensions of the tank, if its 250 US gallons I'm thinking they will be around 8ft x 2ft x 2ft (thats 240 gallons I think). That size tank gives the 3 cichlids a good chance of working, however each fish has its own personality, and with 3 bruisers like you listed theres an increased chance one might be super aggro (thinking the red terror most likely once mature) especially if they are male. Chances will be improved if you get the fish young and grow them on together.

Good luck with the project, hopefully pictures once you sort out the stocking :good:

if all thats going in there is the festae, RD, and jag its possible that it could work, in a tank that big though I would like to do something similar to the shedd aquarium in Chicago, in a tank that big I would get a group of Cits and let em do their thing hopefully not get more than a pair or two.
