I have been researching for a long time about getting a yemen chameleon. Just a few questions though.
I would like to get a baby and keep it in a 18"x18x18 ext terra

http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/screen_terrarium.php

Until it gets bigger (obv need to upgrade tank)
right i read on a tort thread just now that a 60Watt light bulb is a good basking could that work for a cham?
As a UV supply would a bulb or strip be better i hear the coild bulbs are better.

As for food my LFS does a pack of about 15 crickets for £2 which seems like a very high price
i know about gut loading and things and have researched alot i had a corn snakes (i know they are very easy) but its some help i guess.

Does anyone know of a good website that will deliver chams, either carpet, pygmy or yemen (im almost certain i want a yemen) wanna keep options open.

thanks hope you can help
AQUAKING!

couldf i use a 2'x1'x1' aquarium but flip it up so its 2' high1width and 1 foot lenght? I would cover the front with mesh. I could stick a uv strip along the (now back, aquarium bottom) and have a basking lamp on the other side. have some sticks and leaves then get a full mesh tank as he gets bigger maybe?

Thanks

If 2 euro is 4 usd (about) like I think it is- terrible price. You can buy bulk online and keep them and let them breed and never run out... Cost you about 60$ for all the crickets you could ever need. ( You can add lots of new lizards and still have enough crickets ). Not sure where to get the cham though.

Thanks what i thought, they are a good shop but they overprice everything,

Thanks

You need to use a screen cage because chameleons are highly territorial like bettas, and can't stand to see themselves in glass. Chameleons also require near constant attention. They won't drink from a bowl, but instead need a drip system (like water droplets on the plants you provide.) or a moving water source (like an artificial waterfall). They need to misted twice a day, and you must provide both UVA and UVB plus a heat lamp. They need at least six perches, and they have to be at different heights. Also you need to introduce live or artificial plants for the drip system. All in all it will cost upwards into $400-$500 depending on where you shop. In other words, £200-£250.

Thats good to hear because i was hoping to spend around £250. I want to start with a 65 mesh flexarium until it gets bigger. I have been in contact with a few breeders and i can get a young 6-8 week ol for £30. Now a problem with the flexarium is how to maintain heat and humidity levels. I can mist the enclosure 3-4 times (is that 2 many?) and give him a shower once a week.

Will the 60watt bulb be a good heat sorce of heat for the cham. I know you need to measure the temp till its at 95oF in the basking spot. Does anyone know the starter that light bulb goes to? (the link before)

I am willing to put all the effoet in but i am going to research as much as poss and plan out my setu.
Thanks

(does anyone have an exact list of things i will need?)

Thanks

I think i might start with a bearded dragon and then get a chameleon, just to get used to a more simple animal first as chams seem to be much harder to care for. Also beardies seem to be more people friendly.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Damn i want a chameleon again, i feel like i would just be setteling for anything else when i know i have the time and space for one. WellI have got very confused so i will start a new thread so things are clearer.

Its rubbish that chams get stressed in glass vivs. Loads of cham keepers inc myself keep chams in exos while they are growing then move them up to wooden vivs with glass sliding doors
you also need plenty of vents in it.
A 60 watt bulb will be fine but you will need a dimmer stat to control the temperature and i use the 5% uv tubes in all of my cham vivs inc the exos.

I was thinking i would like to keep it in a smaller glass tank (open topped but top would noe be front, would that work?) to make sure its feeding and make sure it feels secuer and not just left in the open. Where would i find a dimmer stat ? Sorry im new and is a 5% UV light enough for a baby?

Thanks

This cham healthy?

It does look healthy with no signs of MBD
Its colouring isnt very good though.make sure if you do get a cham to go for a male as being new you dont need the stress of a female laying eggs
I use 5% with all my yems and panthers. My pygmys dont have any heat or UV.
I am adding Rudis elliots and dwarf jacksons to my collection in the near future as they are all chameleons that give birth to live babies rather than eggs
