I'm certainly no expert on this subject but I am good at finding stuff on google
so here I am asking you to challenge me to find out what the scientific name
of any fish really means in English.

I'm sure everyone knows that corydoras means helmet (cory) skin (doras)
that is easy enough to find out.
let the challenge begin :good:

very good!

Rineloricaria catamarcensis
rhinos means nose
lorica means cuirass of leather

now not to sure on the second bit
best I can assertain is from Catamarca Province
in Argentina :dunno:

polypterus palmas

poly means many
pterus means finned

palmas is from Cape Palmas in Liberia (where the fish was first discovered).

Centropyge interruptus

always wanted to know where centropyge comes from

Centropyge interruptus

centro from Greek, kentron means sting
pyge also Greek means tail

interruptus from Latin inter between + rumpere to break

stinging tail interupted IE with break inbetween

whats stinging tail got to do with pygmy angels?? that makes no sense to me!

don't shhot the translator :p
possibly because it has 16 Anal spines (according to fishbase)

scientist, like us, have very odd ways of naming things :S

I must say
I am finding this very educational, I hope that you are too

Next!
