I have just been playing around with coconuts making these:

Anyone else made them or use them? They were easy to make and cheap :)

What else do you use, i have heard of people using plant pots lol

ive used plant pots (buried into the gravel and covered in pebbles) bog wood placed together to make hiding places and well stacked slate.
ur coconuts look good nice job
think you might have to soak them for a while before they go in ur tank though :good:

Some of them look like hair pieces :fun: :fun:

I'm gonna be trying to make one for my tank soon, i'd normally just buy em already made but i feel like eating a coconut too

I have got them in a bucket not with boiling water :)

I quite fancy making a cave out of slate, will have to keep a lookout for some suitable small chunks

Does anyone know the best way to get moss growing on them? I have seen it done on bogwood with cotton, I assume i could do the same with these?

They're awesome!! How did you cut out the hole?? I understand people use a small saw for cutting them open and making openings but how would you just make a hole?? Really like that one :fish:

Looks really nice, I prefer to stick with driftwood, rocks, pebbles and sand tho :good:

yeah, i had moss on my shop bought (and not nearly as attractive as your) coconut caves!! i attached it with cotton. you need to keep an eye on any corys etc though as they can be a wee bit thick and get tangled!!! the moss does not take long to attach itself though so should be fine. i also had another coconut and simply 'pushed the moss through the hole in the top!! it seemed to attach itself!!

my dad is a roofer and i got some slate tiles from him. i broke them into smaller pieces, sanded the edges so they were smooth and stuck them together in layers with aquarium safe silicone making caves! they were quite cool. remember to soak and wash the slates well first though!!

L :good:

Just used a large flat wood drill bit after cutting it in half. Worst part was getting the coconut in half and getting the stuff out there tuff little buggers lol

my shark and clown loachs love hiding in the slate they wernt so keen on the pots and my jag used to move the small one around and the slate also grows abit of algae for my plec's to suck on bonus :D

I have just been on holiday to wales and came back with a bag of lets say acquired blue slate ;) built a nice little breeding cave for my breeding tank.

Your coconut cave look great.

I know I have seen some in a LFS I was in recently. I was thinking of the bags of blue slate you get as decorative gravel from B&Q but I want it to be chunky looking.. I think roof slate might be too thin also. Hmmm

i got my chunks off slate from my lfs world of water they had it outside for rockerys there was all shapes and sizes with beautiful marking and at 70p a piece i will be goin back this week to get a lot more lol :D
