I want to tansfer some of my fish (5 rainbow and 1 plec) from one tank to another.

I have a net, but the rainbowfish are zippy little so and so's, and after an hour, have sucessfully managed to avoid catpure!

Anyone got any techniques? :hey:

1) remove all decorations plants heater filter ect ect from tank

2) empty out just under half of water

3) grab net

4) corner all fish and chase round after them like a mad man/woman

5) transfer to other tank

6) turn round an scream at what a mess ur old tank is :(

7) re-do old tank and vow never to move fish around again

this is what i was like the other night lol

hope it helps

You're short one net. lol The best thing to do is have one large net that you hold stationary in one corner of the tank. Then, you take a smaller net and guide (chase) the fish into it. As soon as the fish is within the net, scoop upwards with it so the fish cannot just swim back out and get it out of the tank asap... nothing more frustrating than having to catch them twice!

I have a method perfected over many frustrating hours!
What I do is put the nets (2) into the tank and leave them there for say, an hour.
Then I feed the fish some flakes and as they are all gathered around the surface, I scoop them out quickly with both nets, basically the same as AquaNut said.

There is no such thing as a technique for catching any fish in a planted and decorated tank and whoever says they have one is lying :D When I transferred my cichlids into their big tank, it took me a whole day to catch them all. In the end, I don't know who was more stressed - the fish or me :) Ken's idea of catching them at feeding time seems to work best for me also - good luck with your fishing

BTW, if your plec is a large one, don't try to catch him in a net - he will get caught up in it and injure himself. Instead, try using a bowl of some sort.

Brilliant,

Thanks Guys (& Girls!)

I just happen to have two nets............. come here little fishies......

Gadazobe - thanks for the bowl idea for my plec - he is about 4" so i will definately use a bowl.

Here we go.........

I find the best time to catch fish is inthe middle of the night while they are sleaping, if i am trying to catch a fish without doing a full strip down i turn the lights out in both the tank and the room and leave the fish to rest for a few hours. Then without turning the tank lights on i catch the fish before they have a chance to wake up properly using just the room lights to see by.

Sometimes you have to improvise...... I've caught goldfish with a colander.

The 2 net technique works well. I learned to do this when I was trying to rescue a cory fry that had gotten sucked up by the siphon. It's quite hard to catch something you can barely see, in a round pail, using only one net.

If you are trying to catch a small fish or a fry, you can use the second net to create a current that distracts the fish so you can catch him off guard with the second one.

 If you ever get bored, go to the lfs and find a tank of kuhli loaches. Tell the salesperson you want "that" one, not any other one, and point to the center of the tank. ...... After an hour walk away saying........grumble....grumble.......

I use the 2 nets. Both of mine are the biggest I can get because I never know what hand I'm going to catch them in. I slowly corral them into a corner and then as I close in on them I use catlike quickness to grab them! Then they all swim to the other side of the tank through a gap in the net and the gravel or between the net and glass. NOW I have them where I want them because little did they know, I didn't want to catch them in that corner anyways! It's all coming together now, nothing like a great plan coming together.

If anything tries my patience it's the speed of those fricken piranhas and Mbuna! :X I think that's about the only time I wonder why I'm in this hobby. Not to mention a net is only good one time when you catch piranhas

No doubt. The very first time I netted Carnage, he tore the centre out of my biggest net. :grr: :smb:

i totaly got my hair off the other day tryin to catch my kissin g's an rainbow shar omg how fast can they move!! :X
and also.. them g's can get past anythin when they want to i mean come on how many fish (apart from tetras) can get between the filter an glass then go back again when they see the 'dredded' net!

the only one who i could get in my net was george (betta)

he was sooooooo cryin out for attention he was all 'look look at me il get in the net look' (whilst dartin into the net)

Well in the end i went for the......

Take all the wood and rock out (as the fish learnt i couldn't get either net between the rock/wood and the glass) :grr: , then take that d*mn plant out that keeps getting tangled in the nets ( ), dump one net as trying to keep both hands in the tank, whilst trying to look in through the sides of the tank cut off the circulation in one of my arms :X , dripped half the tank on the floor, and played kiss chase with those five 'lovely' fish for 20 minutes. :-(

I would (not) reccomend this to anyone - it worked a treat!

The good news is they have all settled into their nice new tank (where the can stay - forever!) :D

<---- the only thing about doing that is that u will stress out the fish by chasing them around so use 2 nets its easier and less stressful for the fish :look:

I had to net the big ole midas a few weeks ago, I didn't have a net that was large enough so I used a pillowcase. I let the pillowcase create a large tunnel by filling it with water and of course his curiosity got the best of him  , as soon as he swam in I closed the case and pulled him out :D :smb: :kana:
