how many of you have cats?the reason i ask is coz i'm a lil worried that they're always jumping on it,does anyone have the same problem?how much damage can they do or have done to your tanks?

My cat used to pay the tanks a lot of attention:

Sitting on the lid and looking down - with the occassional paw strike. He has never damaged a tank and has recently lost all interest now that he has realised the impossibility of making his catch!

hmmmm... i guess i can keep an eye on them this weekend but they usually do it while we're at work (crazy sneaky cats :grr: )

thanks for the input nik

my cats are a pain. they take the plants out, how i dont know cause i have a lid on it. and they consistantly paw at my babies.

My cats show very little interest, though one of them used to sit on the lids in the winter, I suppose 'cos the lights are nice and warm. :D

if you are concerned with the cats damaging the tanks or getting ahold of the fish, use doublesided tape on the lids and lights. they hate to have their paws stuck to anything and will remember and stay off.

i would be concerned with a cat sticking it's paws in the tanks. cat's generally use a litter box and cover up there waste. then to jump up and play with your fish? doesn't sound good.

my wood stand is scratched up from the dog jumping up to see the fish. he loves to watch them. really cute when he jumps up and the fish come over to investigate him and the two put their noses to the glass!

My kitties are kinda 'ho hum' about our aquariums. They seem totally disinterested in the fish, however our dog thinks that they are his fish. Our largest maintenance is cleaning his nose prints off the outside of the tanks! :D Just a joke, since I spent a minimum of 2 hours a week on inside the tank maintenance :D We have an outdoor pond too and our dog will stand for hours watching the fish and trying to lick them (just a lil taste, please) :D :D

My experience is about the same. Two cats, neither particularly interested in the fish unless I've just had my hand in the tank -- like that fish smell! The dog, on the other hand, will actually stand on his back legs and back away from the tank to get a better view. The corys drive him NUTS! He whines and makes a complete idiot out of himself, while the cats and the other dog laugh at him behind his back. If I place a chair in front of the aquarium for him, he will keep biting at the glass. Ok, he is not the brightest light on the tree, but he's kind of funny to watch.

my two cats just used to drink the water in my beta tank. They also like to sit on top of my big tank, and leave the occasional back claw scratch mark on the acrylic when they are jumping up there.

My cat used to sit on the chair next to the tank for hours on end watching the fish, but I guess that she has realized that she can't get to the fish by now. :shifty: If you're really worried about your cats getting the lid off and reaching inside the tank, you might try weighing the top down. I also would try the double-stick tape idea. (good idea, semper)

I had a 1 gallon tank for my gold fish (before I became a proud owner of a 55 gal ;o) and my 3 cats, don't know which one, managed to knock it over twice....poor thing is still living today.....but I got a 2 gallon and they can't budge it. And this one has a filter, the other didn't.

As far as the big tank goes....I only have 1 of the 3 that are interested at all and it's in the interest lies in the Cory's. I think they remind her of little mice or bugs or something!! My kitties LOVE bugs!!

That is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous...you made that?? Fabulous job. I had jotted down some drawings of a tank stand and lid that I could make and it looks like TOTAL CRAP next to that thing. I better start again......sigh!

silver,

Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, I did make the stand. It's just a 2X3 frame with 1/4" verneer oak plywood skin. I used chair rail for the edging and door frames. Spindals I bought at Lowe's. Turned out better then I thought. Had a basic idea what I wanted the finished project to look like. I have some other ideas that would be good for larger tanks. Mine is a 40 gallon and I do not think it would have looked good on that small a tank.
Did you look at my woodworking page at the other things I've made?
