cardinal tetras...

Hey gf225,

I grew up in P'boro and my lfs there was the Waterzoo...excellent place.

My parents still live there and i go there occasionally when im over that way.

TBH I think your tank will be ok with the two angels as long as water quality etc is kept up. It is probably bare minimum for them, but I think judging by the quality of your aquarium that they would be fine.

I read somewhere 8-10 gallon stocking per angel/discus. Not that you could keep one in a 10 gallon...the dimensions would be too small to start with. However yours is 34 and so there is a bit of lee way and most of your other inhabitants are small.

I do not know whether you subscribe to PFK, but i have noticed that advice in the UK differs slightly to USA especially in regard of stocking.

Oh about neons and cardinals...

Historically neons have been kept in the hobby for longer and have been better acclimitised so that they can survive in a broader spectrum of water chemistry than cardinals. However an oppsosite effect is that neons have been so inbred in captivity that they are not as robust nowadays and so sometimes cardinals (usually wild caught) can actually be more hardy.

I prefer cardinals anyway, they grow slightly larger than neons and are just more intense in colouring,... well more red and blue and no silver.

I have 9 cardinals in a 37High tank that is heavily planted and they NEVER school. They just hang around in one place. I have another school in a 100g tank and they do school a little in that one. I think they need lots of swimming room. There is one neon in there and he schools with the cardinals. The brilliant rasboras in the 100g school the best and they are beautiful fish. I think I like them better than cardinals now. I too lost about 50-70% of all the cardinals I have bought. I have had some success with a really long acclimation process (couple hours at least) of slowly mixing in tank water into the bag and lights off on the tank.
