I plan to get some for my discus tank. Only people who kept them post please, i want experience not what you read on internet sites thanks. Now, i've kept harlequins before, they nip each other, the weakest one dies first..then the next weakest and so on, now i'm odwn to 1 and he's been there for ages and i used to have 14-16. Are cardinals the same? do they nip each other's tail once in a while? If so, i'll pass :/ They are in the same family as the pirahana after all

I've had cardinals for a few months now and they do nip each other once in a while and I see a chunk of tail missing. None of mine have died. I have 9 in a 20 gallon heavily planted tank. I do notice that the smallest cardinal does tend to get picked on, but I guess the plants help and he's still here :) and hes fattening up now.

Hi,

I have 9 in my 400 litre with the fish listed in my profile and they are one of the calmer tetras from the ones i have, i also find them much hardier than neons. They are a good little fish to have.

If you had that happen with harlequin rasboras, you were doing something wrong.

If you'd never kept them, dont say anything. I prefere people with experience over people who just reads on the internet. thanks for the others who told me their experience.

Btw if i am doing something wrong, then my discus wouldnt still be there.

FWIW, I have kept harlequins and stick by my assessment. Until your post, I have never seen or heard about harlequins killing one another through nipping.

Believe it or not, people who have kept a fish before don't necessarily have better knowledge or understanding of how to care for them than those that haven't. For example, you are one of the last people I would ask about how to take care of discus.

It's a free forum and no one here is making you follow their advice. Just ask bettas...

peace,

mh

I have kept Cardinals and I have kept Harlequins.

Cardinals can have a nip at each other from time to time, and being front toothed, they can take a chunk out of a fin, but they don't do it very often. I have kept Rasboras like Harlequins for 40 years and have yet to see an aggressive specimen.

That would be my assessment as well.

I have kept Harleys and Cardinals as well as Rummys and have never had a nipping problem with them. I have 11 harleys and 9 rummys in a tank and they get on just fine. My brother has kept Discus before and he has had Cardinals in with them fine as well. Good luck.
