Ive recently purchased some cardinal tetras, they are settling in nicely, active and feeding well, ive just noticed that one of them sometimes chases another one? is this just general agression between males or is it related to mating? or perhaps something else?

hi
our cardinals are often seen chasing eachother around....they all have their own little 'patch' in the tank & if a fellow cardinal intrudes it will be seen off quickly. nothing to worry about just normal behaviour. our rummys also are constantly flicking back & forth at eachother protecting their little territory. both types of tetras though will still gather in a little gang of their own species at lights out time though, safety in numbers i guess.

I've heard of the behavior before as a "pecking order" kind of like chickens, they're simply asserting dominance or maintaining their "rank" so to speak within the school.
