Cardinal Question

I am thinking of purchasing some cardinal tetras for my 14 gallon tank but the water were i live is hard, and upon further research i have discovered that the majority of cardinals sold are wild caught from the amazon river, so are used to really soft water. I was wondering if i could keep them happily In my tank, because Ive also heard of kidney faliure due to the fact of going from soft water to hard water, and if i cant get cardinals, can somebody suggest any type of tetra, or rasbora of a similar size and beauty.

Neon's should be fine and make the transition perfect i mean they basically are the same freakin thing as Cardinals!

I have bread and kept both Cardinals and neons and this has never been a problem as I have very hard water as well.

I prefer cardinals to neons actually because a cardinals stripes are more distinct while a neons stripes are a tad more translucent. So actually no they're not the same thing.

Well I was simply stating that water conditions for them are the same.

I understand the difference i've kept them for a very long time.

Personally I kept cardinals over neon's for a long time just recently switched it up!

Most cardinals are tank bred or farmed, same as the neons! They are being bought from places like Singapore a lot of the time so I really hope they are being bred or I am one cunfuzzled person!

If you see cardinals in a shop local to you, ask if they are in tap water or on a soft water system. If they are in tap water... they are already used to much harder water

Got cardinals in a pH of 8.2 - 8.8 on a tap water system at work... (cant remember hardness off the top of my head but vcery hard!) and we have never had a problem. I dont think I would buy anything like the Wild Green Neons as its in the name... they would suffer.
