Just a couple of quick questions:

Does it need changing once in a while, and is there any harm in changing it?

If I remove it for a treatment, I assume it's ok to let it dry out and put it back in when treatment is over?

If you use carbon change it at least once a month, I change mine every 14 days.

If it dries I would just replace it with new carbon.

Carbon soaks up impurities in the water, medications etc. Once the carbon is used up it can release the impurities back in to the tank again. Mostly ill add carbon for a specific purpose then remove it and bin it. Its cheap as chips so not really worth recycling.

Hi there carbon can leech the things it has taken out of the water in time. A carbon ball should be replaced within 3 months.

dont use it at all, the vast majority only use these things to remove meds. just dump it. and add another sponge to your filter. its another "snake oil", sales technique.

So the Carbon Sponge actually doesn't really do much then?

There aren't any impurities in the tank or tap water that need soaking up?

Is it absolutely neccessary to change the sponge if one dries out. Had a new sponge in a for about 1 day before taking it out. Paid £6 for 2 so would hate to have to chuck the now dry one away so soon (will need to put 1 back in to soak up white spot medication when treatment is finished).

Cheers for the help so far :)

Carbon is used by the Greek to remove meds, its other use is to make sales for the LFS, a bit like the recommendation that you change filter sponges, every few months, they can in fact last years.

to be honest i dont know if you can refit a carbon sponge, i would have thought that you would be better dumping it, but that's just what i would do, it does not mean I'm right!
