As the header suggests, I have a small internal filter, one side is coarse white filter sponge and the other side is coarse black carbon sponge, do I need the carbon sponge or can I just use more filter sponge ?
Any correspondence greatly appreciated :good:

no, the carbon sponge should be replaced monthly if useing medications, so i would remove it and replace it with a normal sponge, you can also add some filter floss betweent the sponges to trap small particals and polish the water, just watch it doesnt flow down the flow too much. keep a spare carbon sponge just in case you should need it later. di

Cheers, I thought it would be something like that, I kept about half the carbon part and replaced the other half with donated media, it's a nifty wee filter , if only it would stay stuck to the galss  :grr:
Cheers again :good:

absolutely no need for the carbon sponge. though they can be used to remove medication. apart from that, bin it, and add some more sponge media. there was a time, some years ago, when carbon was a "needed" part of filtration. now its no more than an excuse for the LFS to make money. if you do use it to remove medication. dispose of it right after use!
