Carbon changes

How often should i change the carbon in my filter? is it necassary to have it always there?
And how much is needed for 35 gallons?

My tank recommends I change my carbon sponge every month.

Carbon, as far as I understand, is only used to remove chemicals from your water. hth

If your tank is new, you may not want to change the carbon just yet as a significant amount of bacteria grows there. Wait a while more if its new.

If it isnt, chuck the carbon out and put in filter floss instead. Its cheaper, and perhaps better.
