So I have been running my first 75g tank for 6+ months now. I ended up getting the much larger aquael 2000. I had an issue with the stock intake filter eating a couple neon tetras. I quickly picked up a eheim pre-filter which solved that problem.
I have noticed in my past few cleanings that my pre-filter and to a lesser point the top (special place in this filter) low density foam filter get dirty, but the median and high density filters I put in my first tray and my filter floss in the tray after have been pretty clean.
So this last change I decided to get rid of the medium and high density foam filters and just move my filter floss to the bottom and then fill the now empty tray with matrix (which does actually seem to help with nitrate levels... maybe but it appears to).
My question is am I missing something here? Should I add back the extra tray of filters or should I be fine with this new setup. I just felt that 4 foam filters were a little too redundant.
