During a major we turned the filter off because we usually lowered the water beneath the filter pick-up tube. After refilling the aquarium and before turning the filter back on it needs to be primed by pushing the prime button on top of the filter several times. While pumping the prime button, a lot of sediment from the filter gets pumped into the water through the water outlet tube. Now we have to do another water change to get rid of all that crap. One of the advantages of Canister Filters is that they're supposed to be cleaned only 2 - 3 times a year.

The Filter shouldn't have to be cleaned during every water change, right? The Filter was cleaned about six weeke ago.

I know the intake + output line are correctly hooked up.

I also know that the Filter media baskets are correctly installed.

Do we have a bad Filter?

What's going on here? Has anyone else encountered this?

I tried searching on-line for forums dealing with these type of problems but was unseccessful.

Thanks.

that has always happend with my filter too. thing is when you clean the filter some of the muck get loosened but not taken away, it just gets pumped back into the tank and is pulled out by the filter again, seems normal to me.

Same here, pumps a load of crap out. I just let it settle and do what it wants.

Well, guys I think I know what happened and I screwed up. The filter was ON when the water went below the pick-up tube and, I believe, it then cavitated the filter. Sooooo when I primed the hell out of it I not only was filling the canister but pushing sediment (from within the canister) out the outlet tube.

Lesson for today. Turn off the filter or don't lower the water below the pick-up tube.
