So a while back I got a 100 gal tank complete with a Penn Plax Cascade canister filter. Well the unit is starting to make noice I suspect the filter head bearings are starting to go. Anyone actually taken apart the head and cleaned it, or am I better off with just a new cannister? for new cannisters I'm thinking of the Sicce Whale or Fluvals FV lines, any comments on either of them? thanx in advance

I have not had a PennPlax canister, but what I have heard of them is positive and they have good reviews. I currently own two Fluval cans but over the years have had Eheim, Marineland, Odyssee, Fluval canisters. I have never heard or read the terms head, or head bearings applied to canisters. You may want to look up about your canister manual (available online) and restate your question? Good luck!

External canister filters don't normally have bearings. They have an electric coil and electronic components sealed in a plastic resson and that is inside the plastic housing. The only moving part is the impellor, which spins on a steel or ceramic shaft. There might be a small plastic washer on each end of the impellor, as well as a rubber gromet.

If the filter's motor is making noises, clean it and see how it goes.
