I heard that it was rare for pups to get cancer. Lola is at the vet this morning, we had to take her to the emergency vet last night, because all day yesterday she was very lehargic and had her back end arched a bit, which was odd. Anyway, all that vet would take abotu was her labs and their cancers, wouldn't listen to us. She has a mass on the upper inside of her back leg, they don't know what it is. So she was taken to the vet this morning, she won't drink or eat, so they had to put her on an iv. The vet is doing testing on her today.

I am very worried about her. But I was told that it was rare for a pup (she is only 8 months) to get cancer, is this true? I am so worried. If anyone know anything about this, please let me know.

Well I decided to call the vet rather than get my mother's exaggerated tale - they said she has had the mass removed, but that's all the receptinoist could tell me, other than that she was just starting to come out of the anesthtic. She said the vet has to report on it, which I understand. But i wish i knew more of what was going on.

And is cancer in pups rare?

l. michelle, I am sorry to hear your beautiful little girl has had to have surgery and has an unknown mass. I do not know 100% the occurance of cancer in young dogs for sure, but I do know some people who have had it happen to them. Strangely enough, they are labs. Their dogs ranged from 11 months up to 18... Not quite as young as yours, but still young.

I assume your vet is sending the mass for testing and will get the results back to you asap?

I hope your little sweetie is going to be okay.

Well I just heard from my father, he said the vet's office is going to try to get her up and walking when the drugs wear off. My father just told me that this morning she was having alot of difficulty in her back end with walking, they want to know if it is the lump that was causing this, or something else. So they are going to try to get her to walk. If she does, then it would be the lump and things should be fine. If not, they will have to send her for an MRI, and whether or not they find anything, if they do, they may suggest treatments, or they may say there is nothing they can do.

The lump has been sent away for testing. I don't know what to do. I am so worried about my little girl.

Not sure about cancer statistics in pups, but i do know that cancer is becoming a lot more common in labradors now days from inbreeding and stuff, our old black labrador had cancer before she passed away some years ago, which was apparently a genetic thing.

Word from the vet - we have to take her to an animal hospital a few hours away in Guelph, she has to go to intensive care

It is, I have been crying here at work all day, my boyfriend left his work to come to sit with me for a while. I called the vet and was told that she has a major weakness in her backend, they don't know why, so thy are taking her to have neuological surgeons look at her. They said it might be tick paralysis, or coonhound paralyisis, but they really have no idea, we are hoping it is one of those two though, as there are other things it could be which are worse.

Does anyone have any experience with paralysis in dogs? Ugh thinking about this is making me teary again.

Good luck with your pup, i'm sure she will pull through, they are tougher than you think.
I know it must be upsetting for you as they so quickly become a big part of your family.
wishing lola well Angel

Well she's now at a special vet hospital. And is being watched by the critical care unit. Now they think it might be an infection on the base of her spine, which means the lump had nothing at all to do with her behaviour, but I suppose it's good it got removed anyway. The surgeon is going to examine her tomorrow morning. I need to take down the telephone number of the place, because my parents have a funeral to go to tomorrow for a close friend of the family. They said Lola is perfectly healthy besides what ever has been happening with her back end. My parents said the hospital is very nice, with even lambskin on her bed to keep her comfy, and she will be supervised the entire time, and they even turn the dogs over a few times during the night so they don't get stiff laying in one spot. She has a catheter so she won't feel the need to get up to go to the bathroom, and has an iv because she won't eat or drink herself.

I don't know how I am going to be able to sleep tonight. I keep getting so upset about my baby.

Thank you all for your kind words, please keep her in your thoughts.

Just so you know, she's in the best hands ever. Guelph Vet Hospital is the best place for her to be at. (did you know I live in Guelph?- I do - if you need a place to stop in between visits, let me know) I have no doubt that if she is there, they will find what is making her so sick and they will do their best to fix it. It is the best vet school/hospital/diagnostic hospital going I say. Did you know the TO Zoo sends their animals there if they can't do it themselves?

I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I really hope she is going to be okay.

So sorry to hear l.michelle :-( I really hope she gets better. Let us know how it goes
