:D yep thats it

lfs make me laugh he cost me £3 cos it had been sent back for biteing its last owner  when my 12" kamfa flowerhorn bit me it took a chunk out of my palm soon learned my lesson you can clean an oscar tank for 20 years with no problem but the aggresive cichlids BEWARE

Hi i seen these at my lfs and thought they are really stunning fish can they be kept in a malawi setup?

its a convict cichlid(new world) now yes imho you can keep him w/ mbunas BUT id seriously recomend that your mbunas be fully grown and strong... a confict can and will kill your weaker fish... as as for babies he'll snatch them up faster then heck

fyi i have a confict in my tank, he killed the 2 juvies i had in there but all my adult fish were fine

This fish is not a convict cichlid (cichlasoma nigrofasciatum). That is if thats what TheeMon is saying it is?
It is a Tilapia Buttikoferi.
A pal of mine had one that reached 14" long in a 4ftx2ftx2ft.
It was and they are very agressive to other tank mates. The one my friend had ripped the belly out of a very large harlequin shark. :(
This fish ended up in solitary as it would attack anything including its owner!
Most local shops who sell them as juviniles end up with them back in the shop as adults as they get too big and aggressive.
They do make a nice pet fish though and look very nice.
As for being a fish to mix....
I wouldn't recommend it.

it looks a hellva lot like a convict to me... even the mouth...

Its a buttikofferi, you see alot of cichlid owners keeping them with there new worlds, i think there water is the same as jewels.
You can keep it with many types of cichlids but i would go for new worlds only, you need fish that can stand up to them.

TheeMon: A convicts patten and body shape is much differnt to this fish.

great fish you have

arnt they from west africa?

and convicts look waaay diferent to them if youown one  trust me ;)
