Can The Tank Water "evaporate"..... Even With The Filter On

I've got an older tank, it's 55 gallons, and I'd say i loose about 1.5 inches a week. I keep it around 79 degrees, which is definately warmer then the room that it's in. Kinda freeked me out at first how fast it evaporated, but when I take into account the temperature, it makes more sense.

take water out somehow and put fresh water back in.

this is often done with a hose syphon. You stick a hose in the water and suck on the end of it until water comes close to your mouth then put your thumb over the end of the hose and stick it out a window or into a bucket. As long as the end of the hose is lower than the water level of the tank the water should drain out. drain out around 20% of the water then refill it with fresh water.

EDIT: I forgot to add that you need to add water conditioner to the water at some point.

If your not too keen on the taste of fishwater however, try this;

Simply submerge the whole length of pipe in the tank, stick your finger in one end while both ends are still submerged and then feed that end into your bucket with your finger still in (or fold the end of the tube or whatever - just need to be blocked until it's below the level of your tank). Release finger/thumb (whatever) when pipe in bucket and away you go!

No I am not to keen of its taste. i learned that last weekend when i cleaned my fishtanks, I got tank water in my mouth a whole bunch of times, and it didn't taste like chicken either.

WOW i'm stupid. can't believe I never thought of that...it might be because I don't mind a little fish water now and then. =) thanks for the tip.
